Conducting background checks on all coaches, administrators and volunteers associated with your program is vital for protecting each youngster in your league. There are a number of companies that perform background checks. Select the best for your league. At a minimum a league should:
- request references
- inquire before letting someone to coach
- interview a coaching candidate face-to-face
- observe new coaches as often as possible
- Solicit feedback from players
- Have an annual meeting where local authorities discuss with your youngsters the importance of coming forward if they feel they have been violated in any way.
