Just because Charles Davis didn't make the cut with the Dallas Cowboys after a stellar collegiate career, doesn't mean he was done with football. An All-SEC defensive back for the University of Tennessee from 1983-1986, Davis decided to put his football experiences to work for him in the broadcasting booth.
Davis began his career in 1997 as an analyst for the Southeastern Conference. Eleven years later, he is now a color analyst for BCS coverage on FOX Sports and Big Ten Network, as well as a NFL Network studio analyst.
Davis has had many football memories in his day, but he still remembers what it felt like to be starting from square one. He began playing organized football in seventh grade and quickly realized he had a lot to learn.
"I didn't know as much as I thought I did," Davis said. "Being the son of a coach I thought I had it down pat. ... Then I realized my coaches knew a heck of a lot more than I did."
But Davis does have his father to thank for toughening him up on the field as a sophomore in high school trying out for the varsity squad.
"He said, ‘If you're going to be the quarterback with a bunch of veteran guys, you have to find your voice, you have to speak up,'" Davis said. "I remember that to this day, having to step up and be assertive even at times you don't think you should be."
See what else Davis had to say about his first year playing America's favorite sport, what he would tell youth football coaches and why defensive back is the most challenging position on the field.
