Every successful coach knows the importance of watching film, but sometimes compiling film to study is next to impossible with the busy schedules of today's coaches.
"During the course of the season, we study film every day, all day," said Allen Wilson, head coach at Dallas Carter High School and linebackers coach for USA Football's Junior National Team, which will face international competition at the 2009 Junior World Championship this summer.
USA Football is hoping to simplify the process with the launch of their online Film Room, scheduled to launch on April 27.
The Film Room will consist of hours of training video streamed online, all filmed at the Baltimore Ravens Practice Facility. The clips will be simple to navigate and will include options from offense, defense and speed and strength.
"Instructional film is always good, it's always better to actually see something happen then just be told how it happens," said Gary Swenson, head coach at West Des Moines (Iowa) Valley High School and offensive coordinator for Team USA.
With this video available at the fingertips of coaching members, they will be able to see detailed drill demonstrations that they can adapt to their practices as well as visual explanation of the many fundamentals of the game.
Members will have the ability to rewind and pause these videos, with instruction provided by NFL High School Coaches of the Year, in order to take detailed notes to incorporate what they're seeing into their practices and game plans.
"If I'm watching film of my team, I'm looking at what we did wrong and how we can improve for our next game," Wilson said of his film room strategies. "If I'm watching video of the other team, I'm looking for their weaknesses that I can take advantage of. With the online Film Room, it will give coaches the benefit of seeing live action demonstrations of the fundamentals of the game, and you can't beat that."
The Film Room videos will incorporate three different camera angles to provide a clear, unobstructed view of each drill and fundamental, which were filmed with cooperation from players from nationally ranked DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Md.
"To provide this film online to USA Football members is a wonderful idea," Swenson said. "To be able to just log on and look up drills instead of just having it on paper is just wonderful."
The Film Room is expected to launch soon. Check back to usafootball.com to see what all the buzz is about.
