Youth football season may be over, but the time to prepare for the 2010 season is just beginning. Staying active and working hard in the off-season will translate into results on the football field once the first day of practice rolls around again. One way to stay on top of off-season training and improvement is to set goals that will keep you focused and determined on taking your game to the next level.
A goal, defined as a result or achievement toward which effort is directed, should be just that - an area that you as a player would like to see improvement on that requires putting in some sweat and elbow grease to see the payoff.
Just because you're not wearing the pads every day, doesn't mean that you can't still have football on your mind. This off-season, start by setting a goal or two or three that can help you maintain your love of the game while bettering your skills, fundamentals and overall wellbeing.
Looking back on your season, here are two important questions you can ask yourself:
1. What areas of my game did I struggle with on the field?
2. What can I do to improve in these areas?
Think about positive ways you can elevate your game and also keep in mind that the goals you set for yourself should be achievable - setting the bar too high can lead to burnout and disappointment. You'll feel good knowing that you have an attainable goal in sight, and with several months until the start of next season, there is plenty of time to see results!
Once you have put some thought and reflection into the ways you're looking to develop as a youth football player, be sure to write down your goals and keep them in a place where you will see them often - such as up on a bulletin board or in a school locker. Keeping your football goals fresh in your mind will give you that extra boost you need to be successful.
