Born Nov. 11, 1950, Team USA head coach Chuck Kyle has been one of the most successful coaches in Ohio high school history as the head football coach of Cleveland St. Ignatius High School.
Kyle, who owns an overall record of 262-57-1 (.819) and a mark of 54-11 (.831) in Ohio state playoffs since becoming the head coach of St. Ignatius in 1983, has led the Wildcats to 10 Ohio Division I (large school) State Championships in 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2001 and 2008 and five undefeated seasons in 1988, 1989, 1992, 1993 and 1995. No other prep program has won more football titles since the inception of the state’s playoff system in 1972 than St. Ignatius. Kyle also had his teams recognized as Associated Press Ohio State Champions in 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993 and 1995 and was named the AP Ohio High School Football Coach of the Year from 1988-89.
Kyle and his teams have received praise on the national stage on numerous occasions as his squads received the No. 5 ranking in 1988, No. 4 ranking in 1992 and National Champions honors in 1989 and 1993 from USA Today and were crowned National Champions by ESPN, The Sporting News, the National Sports Service and the National Prep Poll in 1995. In 1989 and 1993, Kyle was recognized as National Coach of the Year by USA Today and coached in the East-West All-Star Game in 1989.
After graduating from St. Ignatius, where he was an honor student and tailback during the program’s 1968 undefeated season before receiving his high school degree in 1969, Kyle enrolled at Xavier University in Cincinnati for one year before transferring to John Carroll University. He went on to earn a B.A. in English in 1973 and M.A. in Education in 1977 from JCU. During his senior year in 1972, Kyle returned to St. Ignatius as an assistant coach. From 1972-1982, Kyle served as a defensive assistant and defensive coordinator before becoming the head coach at his alma mater.
Married with four children, Kyle also serves as the head track coach and English teacher at St. Ignatius, and he received the Rossing Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1987. Kyle also conducts a senior elective course on the literary works of Chaucer and Shakespeare.
